Project design

The design for Gateway WA was ambitious and technically challenging, requiring a large multidisciplinary team for delivery. The innovative and visionary project design included the upgrade of both Tonkin Highway and Leach Highway, local network upgrades and new and upgraded interchanges, including;

  • A new interchange at the Tonkin Highway / Leach Highway intersection with a major new access to the international airport terminal
  • One partial free-flow interchange with design allowance for upgrade to movements in all directions (Tonkin Highway / Roe Highway)
  • Two single point interchanges (Leach Highway / Abernethy Road & Tonkin Highway / Horrie Miller Drive / Kewdale Road)
  • One roundabout controlled interchange (Tonkin Highway & Dunreath Drive)
Did you know?
  • Design of the Leach Highway and Tonkin Highway interchange posed particular challenges due to complexities involved with vertical constraints imposed by aviation operations at the adjacent Perth Airport runway, and, additionally, high groundwater levels in the area
  • Waterproof, reinforced concrete ‘bath’ structures were required to take ramp roadways below a section of the new Tonkin Highway and Leach Highway interchange
  • Eleven bridges were constructed on the Gateway WA project and incorporated innovations to enhance the urban design and reduce the impact of piers and deck thickness
