Gateway WA’s largest concrete pour
The Southern Zone team undertook the single largest concrete pour as part of the Gateway WA project for the main deck of the Tonkin Highway / Horrie Miller Drive / Kewdale Road interchange bridge last weekend.
After installing bridge beams last month, the team wasted no time in delivering the next major structural milestone for this interchange. Working from 1am on Saturday, the pour was completed in less than 10 hours.
The surface area of the bridge deck is equivalent to approximately three quarters of an acre in size. With over 1,000 cubic metres of concrete required, it is the biggest concrete pour to be carried out as part of the project.
The deck was cast with live traffic travelling underneath the structure while the work was underway, leading to no disruption for road users travelling along Tonkin Highway as a result of the activity.
The Southern Zone team is now looking ahead to the new year to achieve its next milestone for this interchange which will involve allowing traffic to travel on two lanes of the bridge.
