Underpass construction

The construction of an underpass structure over the long weekend provides Gateway WA with an opportunity to progress its Principal Shared Path network.

As part of the Gateway WA project, 21 kilometres of Principal Shared Path will be installed to provide improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.

The Principal Shared Path will be installed adjacent to the new road alignment along Tonkin and Leach Highways, the extension of Leach Highway into Perth Airport (Airport Drive) and Roe Highway.

An underpass is required for the Principal Shared Path network to cross Roe Highway, west of Tonkin Highway, in the Southern Zone of the project.

Over the course of the Easter long weekend, the project team will excavate the road, lift the pre-cast concrete structures into position and afterwards reinstate the road surface.

To undertake this work safely, a section of Roe Highway must be closed to all traffic. The high volumes of traffic on Roe Highway require the work to be carried out across non-peak traffic periods and this has led to the work being scheduled for the long weekend.

Please see our major traffic changes page for information relating to this closure which includes alternative routes for the travelling public over the weekend. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and some localised detours will be in place for cyclists.

The underpass is one of seven underpasses being constructed as part of the Gateway WA project for its Principal Shared Path network.
